A combination of dark and cosy does not usually work at daytime but Footnote Cafe on 45 Vyner Street embodies everything what is good about East London. Discover this hideaway for cup of joe in Hackney.

This coffee shop has been open since last year, however, you will not find any reviews about it in the internet. And it is absolutely inappropriate to leave people without any knowledge of this little stylish gem in the middle of East London. However, it is absolutely possible to pass the coffee shop without noticing as it is painted in dark and it does not advertise itself with window size sign – ‘COFFEE’. But once you step in, it blows you away with how mysterious and at the same time cute (but not too fussy) this place is. At the entrance it is bright and cozy but once you decide to grab a seat behind the curtains (preferably with something stronger than a coffee), very personal and dark space appears in front of your eyes.

Footnote cafe describes itself as a place where you can get directly traded specialty coffee. ‘The Duke London’ stamped coffee
bag has been unseen to my eye until a visit to Footnote. While you are dropping a teaspoon of sugar into your drink, you are encouraged to read more about the coffee you are about to taste. Footnote‘s chosen blend is made with 100% specialty grade, ethically sourced coffee beans. The blend consists of Brazilian, Guatemalan and El Salvadorian origin beans, 60%, 30% and 10% respectively.  This blend is said to create a balanced, full bodied coffee with great complexity. With the help of La Spaziale espresso machine, Footnote brightens your day with a cup of high quality coffee. While latte feels a bit more milky than usual, shot of espresso is really worth to be mentioned while discussing the great London coffee culture.

Lovely and pretty baristas, stylish interior, great coffee and desserts – that’s what East London is about and a new Footnote coffee shop has proved to be a ‘delight’ for local coffee scenery.

Oooh, not one I’ve come across before! Not that I get out that way much, but I’ve added it to my list.

    Thanks,
    Brian.

      Hi Audrey,

I think Footnote has moved to the Machines Room on 45 Vyner St (a short walk to the east). 515 Cambridge Heath Road looked rather empty when I was there a couple of weekends ago (although it was a Sunday).

      Brian.
